Baja’s waters are alive with wildlife year-round, but each season brings its own encounters. From gray whales and whale sharks to sea lions, mobula rays and migrating marine life, discover what you can experience in the Sea of Cortez throughout the year.
Gray Whales
JANUARY-MARCH
Every winter, gray whales make their remarkable migration from Arctic feeding grounds to Baja. They gather in the Pacific lagoons to mate, give birth, and raise their calves before beginning the long journey north again.
Humpback Whales
DECEMBER-MARCH
Humpbacks migrate through Baja's waters during the winter season. Their powerful breaches, tail slaps and surface activity can make for spectacular encounters.
California Sea Lions
YEAR-ROUND
Sea lions can be found throughout the Sea of Cortez, with one of the most memorable encounters at Los Islotes near Espíritu Santo Island, where they gather on the rocks and play in the surrounding waters. The colony is open for observation only from June 1 to September 1 due to the mating season.
Whale Sharks
NOVEMBER-MARCH (Some seasons may vary)
These gentle giants return to the waters around La Paz seasonally. Swimming alongside one is an unforgettable experience—and one of the most unique wildlife encounters Baja has to offer.
Mobula Rays
MAY-JULY
During the warmer months, large aggregations of mobula rays can gather in the Sea of Cortez. When thousands move through the water together, the sight can be truly spectacular.
Orcas
YEAR-ROUND
Orcas are occasional visitors to the waters of Baja California Sur, where they may be encountered hunting dolphins, rays, sea lions and other marine life. Sightings are relatively rare and unpredictable, but when they happen, they can be one of the most extraordinary encounters in the Sea of Cortez.
Dolphins
YEAR-ROUND
Several species of dolphins inhabit the Sea of Cortez. Encounters can range from spotting pods in the distance to watching them swim and play alongside the boat.
Blue Whales
WINTER-SPRING
The largest animals on Earth can be found in Baja's productive waters during certain periods of the year. Sightings are less predictable, making an encounter with one particularly special.
Sardine Run
FALL
Huge schools of sardines attract an incredible variety of predators, creating some of the Sea of Cortez's most dynamic underwater scenes.
Sea Turtles
YEAR-ROUND
Several species of sea turtles inhabit Baja's coastal waters. They can often be encountered around reefs, rocky shores and shallow bays while snorkeling or exploring by boat.
Tropical & Reef Fish
YEAR-ROUND
The rocky reefs, kelp beds and shallow bays of the Sea of Cortez are home to an incredible variety of colorful fish. Snorkeling can reveal schools of sergeant majors, angelfish, parrotfish, damselfish, pufferfish and many other species moving through the reefs.
Giant Mantas
NOVEMBER-MAY
Socorro is one of the world´s best places for giant manta rays and a liveaboard is the best way to see them.
